The first ‘Packaging Man of the Year’ award programme was organised.

A total number of 4 entries was received.

Judging was held at the Outspan Hotel, Durban.

The programme name was changed to ‘Bob Wooler Awards Programme’

Gold and Silver Plaques were introduced for the first time to enlarge the scope of the awards programme.

5 entries were received and judging took place at Unilever house, Durban.

The awards were presented at the Regional Annual General Meeting at the Holiday Inn, Durban.

Highly Commended Certificates were introduced into this year’s programme.

10 entries were received.

A scoring system was used by the judges. Les Adams passed away on 28 October, ten days after having chaired the judging committee on 18 October. Pierre Olivier was subsequently made Chairman.

Presentations were made at the Cape Regional Annual General Meeting.

At the National Executive meeting in June, it was resolved to change the name of the awards programme to ‘S.A. Gold Pack Awards’. A new category structure was introduced allowing for TRANSIT packaging to be judged separately from RETAIL packaging, with three sub-categories in each of the two section.

The new managing committee members were Pierre Olivier - Chairman with Mike Mossop and John Marriott.

The judging committee was structured as follows:
Roger Titlestad - Chairman
Mike Mossop - Unilever
Coleen Shearer - Newspaper Columnist
Pierre Olivier

Expenses for the 1979 SA Gold Pack Awards amounted to R500.00.

1979 was the first year in which the awards programme enjoyed a presentation function of its own and were not simply handed out at speaker meetings or A.G.M.s.

The presentation dinner was held at the Newlands Hotel in Cape Town with Guest Speaker Dixie Dean, then Chief Executive of Institute of Packaging U.K.
